ABOUT THE QUALIFICATION

The CIPS Level 4 Diploma, your strategic procurement qualification.

The CIPS Level 4 Diploma in Procurement and Supply is the benchmark qualification for procurement professionals worldwide. It marks the transition from operational buying to strategic thinking and it is the first non-negotiable step on the pathway to MCIPS Chartered status.

The diploma is regulated at RQF Level 4 (equivalent to NQF Level 6) and consists of 8 core modules covering scope and influence, commercial contracting, ethical sourcing, negotiation, supplier relationships, asset management, and an integrated capstone. It’s widely recognised across the UK and internationally by FTSE 500, public sector and mid-market employers.

Assessment is where Level 4 steps up significantly from Level 3: 6 Objective Response (OR) multiple-choice exams plus 2 Case Response (CR) written case study exams, the first time CIPS asks you to demonstrate strategic thinking and professional judgement in writing.

The qualification is valued by employers as evidence of strategic competence, commercial awareness, ethical practice and readiness for category manager, senior buyer, and procurement manager roles.

FAQs

Your Level 4 questions, answered.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Book a free call with Katie and ask her directly.
  • Do I need Level 3 before enrolling on Level 4?

Level 3 is recommended but not mandatory. If you have 2+ years’ procurement experience you may be eligible for direct entry. We run a short assessment during your free consultation to confirm your readiness and if Level 3 would be a better starting point, we’ll tell you honestly.

  • Can I study Level 4 while working full-time?

Yes, the majority of our students do. Typical commitment is 8–12 hours per week across your 9–18 month study window. Live sessions are scheduled at convenient times with recordings always available, so you can fit study around work and life.

  • How long does Level 4 take to complete?

Typically 9–18 months from enrolment to your final exam. Most students complete Modules 1–4 in the first 6–9 months and Modules 5–8 in the second half. You set the pace within your study window.

  • What’s the difference between OR and CR exams?

OR (Objective Response) exams are multiple-choice — 60 questions, ~1.5 hours, testing breadth of knowledge. CR (Case Response) exams are written case studies — complex scenarios with written responses, ~2 hours, testing strategic thinking and professional judgement. Level 4 has 6 OR exams (Modules 2–7) and 2 CR exams (Modules 1 & 8). CR exams are the biggest step-up from Level 3. We provide dedicated coaching for both formats.

  • What happens if I fail an exam?

One resit is included with your course fee. You’ll take the resit in the next available exam session (typically 1–3 months later). We provide detailed feedback on your first attempt, targeted revision support, and one to one coaching before the resit. Further resits beyond one incur additional CIPS exam fees.

  • Can I spread the cost over 12, 18 or 24 months?

Yes. We offer interest-free payment plans across 12, 18 or 24 months. Monthly payments are charged automatically on the same day each month. Your 18-month study window is independent of your payment plan, you can pay over 24 months while completing study sooner.

  • Will my employer pay for Level 4?

Many do. Procurement teams are particularly likely to sponsor CIPS training because the ROI is clear. We provide a sample business case template, employer testimonials and flexible invoice terms (net 30 / net 60). Most of our Level 4 students secure full or partial employer sponsorship.

  • How is Level 4 assessed?

Eight modules, eight exams. Six are Objective Response (multiple-choice) covering Modules 2–7, and two are Case Response (written case study) covering Modules 1 and 8. Typical pass mark is 60% per module. Exams are set and marked directly by CIPS.

  • What’s the difference between Level 4 and Level 5?

Level 4 is the strategic foundation — eight core modules, same for everyone. Level 5 (Advanced Diploma) builds on it with deeper strategic topics and specialist electives you choose based on your interests, such as digital procurement, supply chain resilience or category management. Level 5 is typically 12–18 months and pitched at senior/management procurement roles.

  • Can I progress to MCIPS after Level 4?

Level 4 is your first step on the MCIPS pathway. You cannot progress to MCIPS without it (or equivalent). The full route is: Level 4 → Level 5 → Level 6 → 3 years’ procurement experience (can overlap with study) → Professional Review → MCIPS. Total timeline is typically 3–6 years from Level 4 enrolment.

  • What’s included in the £2,600?

Everything you need to pass the diploma: all 8 modules with study materials and case studies, weekly/fortnightly lessons (live or recorded), 7 hours of one-to-one tutor time with Katie, marked practice assessments and mock exams, CR and OR exam technique coaching, 1 resit, small class size (max 12), 9–18 month study window, pastoral support from LC, and lifetime access to study materials. CIPS exam and registration fees are charged separately by CIPS (approximately £800–£1,200 for all 8 exams).
